In 2003, the Boulder City Council approved an outdoor lighting ordinance requiring non-compliant lighting fixtures to be replaced by August 15, 2018. The objectives of the ordinance are to:

• Prevent light trespass
• Improve safety and security (including addressing the special nighttime lighting needs of an aging population)
• Reduce light pollution
• Reduce excessive glare, promote energy conservation.
